June 9 — Columba of Iona & William Carey: The Gospel Goes Further

On June 9, we remember two missionaries separated by more than a thousand years but united by the same calling.

Columba of Iona left the shores of Ireland in the sixth century and carried the light of Christ to the rugged lands of Scotland. From a small monastery on the island of Iona, the gospel spread across a nation and beyond.

More than a millennium later, Baptist missionary William Carey crossed oceans to India with a burden for those who had never heard the name of Jesus. A cobbler, pastor, translator, educator, and reformer, Carey helped ignite the modern missionary movement and inspired generations to carry the gospel to the ends of the earth.

Different centuries. Different lands. One mission: that the good news of Jesus Christ would reach every people and every place.

In this episode of Moments Almanac, we reflect on the faith, perseverance, and missionary vision of these two remarkable servants of God, and we are reminded that whether across the sea or across the street, Christ still calls His people to carry His light into the world.

📖 Scripture: Romans 10:15
"How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news."

Hello and welcome to Moments Almanac, a time to remember the people, places, and events that leave fingerprints on the soul. My name is Matt Tullis, and I'm so glad that you decided to join me today. It's June 9th, 2026, and today we remember two missionaries separated by centuries but united by a common burden, that the good news of Jesus Christ should reach those who have not yet heard. On this day in 597, Columba died on the island of Aona, off the coast of Scotland. Born in Ireland, Columba left the familiar shores of home and sailed into uncertainty. On that small island, he established a monastery that became a beacon of learning, prayer, and missionary outreach. From that windswept island, missionaries carried the gospel into Scotland and beyond. What began as a small community of believers became a light that pierced the darkness in an age that's often remembered for conflict and instability. Jesus said, You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden Matthew five fourteen. Columba reminds us that God often changes nations through people who are willing to leave comfort behind and let Christ's light shine. And then more than a thousand years later, another missionary would hear the same call. William Carey was a village cobbler and a Baptist pastor, and a man burdened by a question many Christians of his day had stopped asking. Who will take the gospel to those who have not heard? When others argued that God would save the nations without human help, Carey opened his Bible and saw a different story. The Great Commission. It was still in effect. He famously challenged believers expect great things from God, attempt great things for God. Carey sailed to India in 1793. The years that followed weren't easy. He endured poverty, disease, family struggles, and heartbreaking losses, yet he remained faithful. He translated the scripture into multiple languages, established schools, advocated against social injustices, and helped ignite a modern missionary movement. When William Carey also died on this day, June 9th, the year was 1834, the seeds he planted were already bearing fruit around the world. The missionary call is not always a call across the ocean, sometimes it's a call to cross a street. Not everyone is called to India, not everyone is called to Iona, but every believer is called to carry the light of Christ wherever God has placed them. The same Lord who guided Columba across the sea and Carey across the world still sends his people today. How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news. William Carey once wrote, I can plod. I can persevere in any definite pursuit. To this I owe everything. The kingdom of God is often advanced not merely through brilliant people, but through faithful people who keep putting one foot in front of the other. And may we do the same. This has been Moments Almanac. Until tomorrow, take care. Notice those scattered moments and share the grace.
