The Great Cloud is a gathering place — part Hall of Fame, part family reunion — for the saints and pioneers who shaped the faith we've inherited. Some of them you've heard of. Others have been quietly waiting, for generations, for someone to say their name out loud again.
They were preachers and poets. Reformers and rebels. Missionaries who sailed toward almost certain suffering and mothers who prayed in kitchens no one ever wrote about. Some changed nations. Some changed one street, one church, one soul — and that was enough.
None of them were perfect. All of them were faithful, in the particular, unglamorous way that faithfulness usually looks up close — which is to say, it often looked like showing up on the hard days.
Here you'll find biographical sketches of the men and women whose lives still speak, along with audio from past episodes of Moments Almanac where their stories first found voice. Consider it a hallway of portraits — some familiar, some newly rediscovered — each one a reminder that we didn't get here alone.

John Wesley
1703–1791
Anglican priest, evangelist, and founder of the Methodist movement, John Wesley spent more than fifty years preaching across Britain, often on horseback and in open fields. Arthur Flake
1869–1958
Arthur Flake was a Southern Baptist layman whose simple yet revolutionary vision transformed Sunday School ministry across America. Convinced that every person deserved an invitation to grow in Christ, he developed practical principles for reaching new people, organizing classes, and equipping churches for discipleship. His ideas became known as the "Flake Formula" and shaped generations of Sunday School leaders. Though he rarely stood behind a pulpit, his influence reached countless congregations through faithful service and wise leadership. Lemuel Haynes
1753–1833
Born to a Black father and a white mother, Lemuel Haynes was abandoned as an infant and raised as an indentured servant in rural New England. Through determination and a deep love for Scripture, he educated himself, became a soldier in the American Revolution, and was ordained as the first Black minister in a mainstream Protestant denomination in the United States. Haynes preached faithfully for decades, calling people to Christ while boldly proclaiming that the gospel leaves no room for slavery or prejudice. His life stands as a testimony to the transforming power of grace, the dignity of every person made in God's image, and the quiet strength of steadfast faithfulness.
