One of those mornings...

I suppose it happens to the best of us, but I’m pretty sure it happens to me most often. I wake up on Sunday and get ready for church. After dressing, I open the refrigerator and it happens. The refrigerator avalanche! Some items were stuffed into the refrigerator and when I opened the door a few items jumped out and onto my white shirt. I change shirts and sit down for coffee and the cat flies onto my lap. The tan shirt is now markedly tanner from the coffee stains. I changed shirts again.  My selections were becoming more limited. Before I walk out the door, with coffee in my hand, because I was running late, I sit down in the car and bump the coffee again!  This time on the dash, my last clean dress shirt and my pants. Needless to say, my morning exasperated me.

This morning’s comedy of collisions reminded me of this incredible bent to sin which I fight every day. Every time I mess up, God always has a clean start ready for me. But the difference is that I own a small collection of Sunday-worthy shirts, but God’s backup wardrobe is limitless. His righteousness never runs out. There’s never been a time in my life when my mess-ups caused God to say, “Sorry, son. I’m all out of chances. When you stop making messes, I’ll come see you. Don’t call me. I’ll call you.” That’s not how God works. His mercies are new every morning. Despite how many ways I sin. I’m learning to be more careful and I’m gaining ground every day. I’m not the man I was last year but it helps me to remember God’s infinite wardrobe of forgiveness.
