Still Searching for the Words

Fear has a way of convincing us that we are alone. In this modern psalm, Matt Tullos reflects on a life often marked by fear—and the greater truth he has discovered along the way: through every unknown, every failure, every beginning, and every ending, Jesus has remained faithful. Fear has a way of convincing us that we are alone.

In this modern psalm, Matt Tullos reflects on a life often marked by fear—and the greater truth he has discovered along the way: through every unknown, every failure, every beginning, and every ending, Jesus has remained faithful.

Still is a meditation on the relentless love of Christ, the Friend of sinners who refuses to let go. Against the backdrop of an October landscape—falling leaves, cool winds, birds, clouds, and the fingerprints of the Artisan of the cosmos—Matt searches for words large enough to describe a Savior who remains indescribable.

It is a journey from fear to remembrance, from remembrance to worship, and finally, from restlessness to rest.

I was afraid.
There were things worth fearing.
But underneath every fear,
behind every unknown,
before every beginning,
after every ending—
You were there.

Stay through the end of the episode for an original song inspired by the poem “Still.” Words by Matt Tullos, created through Suno.

Still, I've come to a sobering truth. I have spent much of my life afraid, afraid of everything, afraid of nothing in particular, afraid the way a man is afraid when he has forgotten who is holding him. And still I search for words. I gather them like leaves, one after another, knowing none will be enough. But I will speak anyway. I am still searching for words for you, King Jesus. So let the leaves keep falling, one after another, each one a word I could not find on my own. I will speak of your faithfulness until my breath is gone, and even then the leaves will keep falling, and every one of them will still be saying what I could not finish saying. There were things worth fearing, but underneath every fear, behind every unknown, before every beginning, after every ending, you were there, still. And you were holding me. So today, I will rest in knowing only in part until the day I know in full. Until faith becomes sight, until the carpenter I have followed from a distance stands before me. Until I finally see the face of the one who has been holding me all along. Relentlessly faithful, continuously sufficient, absolutely available, ever present, never-ending, all-consuming, grace amazing, love divine. Still one with many friends may be harmed, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

I keep searching for the words. How to write the story well of the one who loves me so when I run out of clean, you're still here playing his day in the most way.
