Good evening friends and welcome to another sleep story on scattered moments. This story is a story about Lottie Moon, the missionary, and the lantern light. Tonight, settle into a comfortable position. As you lay on your pillow, let your shoulders relax and let your breathing slow. There is nowhere you need to be. Nothing you need to accomplish. Nothing to prove. Only this moment. Only the quiet. Take a slow deep breath in and let it go. Again. A slow breath in and a slow breath out. As the day fades away, imagine yourself standing beneath a sky filled with stars. The year is 1873. The world feels larger than it does today. There are no airplanes crossing the heavens. No glowing screens. Only the moon. Only the wind. Only the gentle creak of a ship waiting in the harbor. A young woman stands near the railing. Her name is Lottie Moon. She is not famous. She does not know that generations will remember her name. She knows only that God has called her. And that is enough for Lottie. It is enough for you as well. The evening air is cool. The sea stretches beyond sight. The lanterns along the dock glow softly against the darkness. Listen to the water against the hull. The gentle rhythm, the rise and fall. The rise and fall. The rise and fall. Lottie looks toward the horizon. Soon she will leave behind familiar roads, familiar faces, familiar comforts. Soon she will sail toward China. Toward a place she has never seen. Toward people she has never met. Toward a future known only to God. Yet tonight she is simply standing beneath the stars. Breathing, trusting, waiting. Perhaps you know something about waiting. Perhaps there are questions in your own life that remain unanswered. Perhaps there are roads you cannot see. Lottie could not see them either. Faith often begins where certainty ends. The night grows deeper. The ship begins its journey. Days become weeks, weeks become months. The ocean stretches endlessly around her. Blue water, blue sky, the slow movement of clouds, the steady rhythm of the sea. Morning after morning, evening after evening, God remains faithful. Not because the voyage is easy, but because his presence travels with her. The psalmist once wrote, The Lord will watch over you. He will watch over your coming and going both now and forever. Imagine Lottie reading those words. Imagine her whispering them in prayer. Imagine the comfort they brought to her heart. Now allow those words to gently settle into your spirit. The Lord watches over your coming and your going, your beginnings, your endings, your questions, your future, your sleep. The Lord watches over you. The voyage finally ends. China unfolds before her. Villages and fields, narrow pathways, children laughing in the distance. The smell of cooking fires carried by the evening breeze. Life here moves at a different pace. There are challenges, loneliness, misunderstandings, long days. Yet there are also moments of extraordinary beauty. A sunrise over distant hills. The kindness of a neighbor, a conversation shared over tea, the sound of scripture spoken aloud. Small moments, sacred moments, the kind that often go unnoticed. The kind God loves to use. Years pass, the seasons come, and the seasons go. Again and again. Lottie learns something very faithful. She learns something many faithful believers discover. God is often not found only in traumatic moments, but in ordinary days, in patient service, in quiet obedience, in small acts of love, a letter written, a prayer offered, a hand extended, a word of encouragement. Most of life is lived there, not on mountaintops, but along simple paths. And God walks those paths with us. The evening settles over a village. A lantern glows in the darkness. Lottie sits quietly writing. Outside the world grows still. The sounds of the day fade. The lantern light dances softly across the page. She writes of the goodness of God, his provision, his faithfulness. Not because life is easy, but because God remains close. The same God who guided Abraham beneath the stars. The same God who walked with wreath through uncertain fields. The same God who comforted David in lonely places. The same God who met weary disciples on the road to Emmaus. The same God watches over her and watches over you tonight. In this moment, as your breathing slows, as your thoughts begin to quiet, as the weight of the day gently loosens its grip. Do not carry tomorrow tonight. You are not responsible for solving every problem before sleep comes. You may rest. You may trust. You may place your unfinished concerns into the hands of the one who never sleeps. The lantern grows dim. The village becomes quiet. The stars overhead shine brightly. A cool breeze begins gently through the night. And somewhere in the stillness of God's faithful presence, He remains, as it always has, as it always will. Rest now. The Lord is near. Rest now. The Lord is faithful. Rest now. The Lord watches over you. And may the peace of Christ guard your heart and your mind. May his presence surround you. May his mercy meet you with the morning light. Good night. And may the peace of God be with you.
